Bruny Island Day Trip Itinerary
If you are in Hobart, you should definitely make a day trip to Bruny Island. It takes about 40 minutes to get to Kettering, where you will take a ferry to cross a small pond between the mainland and Bruny. The ferry to Bruny takes cars, so definitely bring a car, as it is difficult to do without a car. There are plenty of attractions on Bruni, from bush walks to tasting fabulous local produce. So no matter what you are interested in, you can easily spend the day exploring this island.
If you want to follow our route, see what we’ve done in a day on Bruni. We have focused on North Bruni only because we wanted to spend a super cool day, but there is a certain amount of time to add to this route additional classes in the south.
Neck Viewpoint
Our first stop on Bruni was to visit the Neck viewing platform. It is here that the narrow neck connects the north and south of Bruni island. As you drive along the main road to Bruni, pay attention to the small parking lot on the left to stop and climb the stairs to get to the viewing platform. At the top is so beautiful – on the left you can see Adventure Bay, and if you turn to the other side, you can look at Hobart and Mount Wellington. If you have time, also take the stairs to the left to visit the beach.
If you’re somewhere less touristy, visit the Cape Queen Elizabeth Trail, a walk that takes you through beautiful greenery and ends at a fabulous rocky beach. Finding a parking lot and entering the track can be quite difficult, so if you travel from the ferry terminal, after you pass the runway, there will be a small parking lot on your left. The track itself is quite simple, the only difficulty with this walk is time, because most of the beach and beautiful rock formations can only be reached at high tide. So the top tip is to make sure that you checked the tides before you go! If you are lucky enough to visit it at low tide, you can walk around the beach and climb through interesting rock formations and arches all along the coast. This is a really beautiful beach – the only reason why it is probably so deserted is its inaccessibility. If you can visit it only at high tide or at other times, you can still take a walk, but you just can’t get to the beach. Right in front of the beach, the road splits into two – one on the beach and one on Mars Bluff – take this one, so you can see the beach and some of the rock formations from above.
Fresh oysters in “Get Shucked”
If you are an oyster fan like me, you should visit one of the many oyster places on Bruny Island. We went to “Get Shucked” to taste their fresh oysters. They serve them in a million different ways, so you can get them fresh, kiltpatrick, steamed or stuffed. They are very tasty here, and if you haven’t had enough oysters at the cafe, you can always take them away. They make an “oyster passage” on the side of the building, which is a super cool idea!
Bruny Island Cheese Co
For cheese lovers, visit the cheese company “Bruny Island”. They have a tasting cheese for 5 dollars, a cafe full of food, as well as many local products to buy. We picked up some elderberry concentrate (!!!), which is ideal for making iced fruit tea. They are also sold to make their own cheese sets (!!!), as well as many other delicious things. If you do not come on Sunday, you can stop by the building to see how they make cheese.
